Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism as a student. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of an individual member of the Jury. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective. She is an actress, well-known for her roles in American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn was in the role of Rose as well as Anna Payne for A More Perfect Union.
